Saturday, October 16, 3 - 6:30 PM PST
Oshman Family Jewish
Community Center/Palo Alto JCC
3921 Fabian Way
Palo Alto, CA 94303

Hear true stories from OCD patients about living with and overcoming obsessive compulsive disorder. Watch live as stories unfold from across the country. Listen to top OCD therapists and other experts as they share their personal experiences from working in the field. Get your questions about OCD answered by local cognitive behavior therapist.

This is a national event that will give voice to those who are intimately affected by OCD. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the event will have three parts:

Local therapist, Heidi Hartston, Ph.D., will present an overview of OCD and answer questions.

In a live streaming video, doctors who treat people with obsessive compulsive disorder, family members of people with OCD, and those who suffer from OCD will engage in a night of true storytelling.

Small group discussions after the event will allow attendees to have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on what they have seen and heard

Admission and parking is free

SACRAMENTO | Brian McPeak suffered with obsessive compulsive disorder for more six years, meeting with therapist after therapist, each of which was unable to diagnose or properly treat his disorder.

Dr. Robin Zasio, a Sacramento OCD expert, has treated thousands of patients like McPeak who have suffered for years with obsessions and compulsions that they could not control. Zasio, in conjunction with the International OCD Foundation, has launched OCD Sacramento, an affiliate of the foundation that will help OCD sufferers in the Greater Sacramento area. Her goal in starting the affiliate is to provide resources to patients and their families.

“We’re saving lives when people get proper treatment for OCD,” Zasio said. “Our mission is to provide access to resources, lead support groups and educational programs, and eventually work to train other therapists in the techniques to treat OCD.”

The affiliate in Sacramento is the 8th local affiliate of the International OCD Foundation.

“While we provide services on a national level, our local affiliates are able to connect to the people most in need,” said Dr. Jeff Szymanski, executive director of the International OCD Foundation. “OCD Sacramento will bring awareness, new programs and more resources to a major urban area that is surprisingly short in treatment programs for OCD.”

McPeak, a married father of four and a professional in the high-tech industry, was terrified and obsessed with thoughts of getting sick and dying. He’d insist his doctor see him immediately for even the most minor ailments, and then McPeak would push for blood work and test after test to seek reassurance. The obsessive thoughts were a drain on his marriage, family, work and quality of life.

Visits to therapists and doctors brought McPeak no relief from his relentless anxiety and compulsions.

Finally, through research, he believed he may have OCD and found Zasio’s practice, where he was properly diagnosed and treated. His core treatment was through a technique known as Exposure Response and Prevention therapy. McPeak learned how to manage his OCD symptoms. McPeak is helping others and hopes to be a voice and advocate for those suffering from OCD. He now serves as vice president of OCD Sacramento.

“When you have OCD you feel like you’re the only one in the world who is suffering and that no one understands you,” McPeak said. “But there is hope and there is help out there. I don’t want anyone to feel alone, like I did.”

Dr. Zasio, a member of the International OCD Foundation’s speakers bureau and Scientific Advisory Board, is the founder and director of The Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center. Dr. Zasio, a licensed clinical psychologist and licensed clinical social worker, is also a featured doctor on the hit series Hoarders, airing on A&E.

OCD Sacramento will host a monthly speaker’s series that launches May 24. See the full program schedule and learn more about OCD Sacramento at www.ocdsacramento.com

About the International OCD Foundation:

The International OCD Foundation is the foremost resource about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related illnesses. It is an international organization that exists to raise awareness among policy makers and the general public about OCD, educate the mental health community about the latest treatments and research, connect people suffering from OCD with treatment providers, and advance research for more effective treatments. Based in Boston, the OCDF has affiliates in Boston, Chicago, Florida, Minneapolis, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The IOCDF was founded as the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation in 1986 by a dozen OCD patients at Yale. Twenty-three years later, the organization has an annual $1 million annual operating budget, has granted $2.5 million for treatment research, and is a resource for tens of thousands of people. They kicked off a series during OCD awareness week with a talk on Finding the Right Level of Treatment given by the staff of OCD Intensive Outpatient Clinic from Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, as well as offering a Pizza Party in Erie, PA with therapists on hand to give to support to adults, children and adolescents suffering with OCD and their parents, family and friends. These events had an overwhelming response.

In February they presented a seminar based on the NAMI Hearts and Minds program. Attendance at this lecture was sparse given the storm issues experienced this winter.

Concluding the open lecture series on March 25 was Dr. Robert Hudak, who provided information on how to distinguish between obsessions and delusions to facilitate better diagnosis and ultimately proper treatment. The lecture was well attended and as always, Dr. Hudak is quite experienced in ensuring both professionals and people struggling with mental health issues benefit from the information presented.

OCF of Western PA will be teaming up with LIFE Pittsburgh for the final seminar of the year. This seminar is only offered to mental health professionals due to space limitations. This seminar on Diagnosing and Treating Compulsive Hoarding will offer continuing education. The date in June is still to be determined.

In November OCF of Western PA once again gathered in North Park for the 3rd Annual Dirt Monster 5 Mile Trail Race and 1 Mile Trail Walk. It was another great success raising over $2000!

Recently, they have added a fan page to Facebook so you can find the scheduled events for the OCF of Western PA.

Downloadable Materials

Today we added a new section to the website called "Download Materials". Here, you will be able to find all of our print materials, both brochures and fact sheets. As we continue to grow the website, you'll soon be seeing information on many more topics, such as PANDAS and trichotillomania.

Our new additions today:

2008 Mental Health Parity Bill Fact Sheet

"What You Need to Know About OCD" (Hebrew translation)

Body Dysmorphic Disorder Fact Sheet

Hoarding Fact Sheet

Brain Surgery and Medical Device Options for OCD Fact Sheet

Search Engine

We've done our best to make our new site easy to navigate, but if you are looking for something that you can't find, give our new search engine a try. You can find this page in the future under the "Home" tab on the main navigation bar.
